Ramadan is where home cooking reigns supreme, but living in the Capital city of Maldives means having to brave the terrible traffic on the streets looking for elusive ingredients that you just can’t do without.
Here at Taste, we decided to make you a little cheat sheet so you know exactly where to find some interesting ingredients to make dishes to wow your family and friends with your cooking prowess.
What the Fish?!
So you want to make something super special. We all know Chicken, Tuna and Buffalo meat masquerading as beef is available at every corner shop, but how about some lovely salmon instead? Don’t worry, we got you covered.
We found some incredible chilled Norwegian Smoked Salmon for sale at United Shop located on Hithahfinivaamagu. Smoked Salmon is perfect for a special pasta dish, or for use as filling in savory pastries.
They also offer frozen cold smoked Salmon available is chilled meats isn’t your cup of tea.
Oodles and Oodles of Noodles
Noodles is a staple for breaking fast at many households, but why not switch it up a bit and use rice noodles instead. Rice Vermicelli and Rice Stick Noodles are so much tastier and healthier than instant noodles packets. Trident Rice Noodles, found at Seagull Foods, is 99% fat free with 0 added preservatives, artificial flavors and colors.
Plus, the near translucent rice stick noodles makes for so much better presentation than just plain ol’ packet noodles.
Real Pepperoni for Your Pizza
Pizza dough is available at most bakeries during Ramadan, but when it comes to toppings, real pepperoni is hard to find. Most people just use thinly sliced Salami that comes in cans, but we found actual pepperoni for all you budding epicureans out there.
Find sliced and chilled pepperoni slices at United Shop, to make your pizza party a flawless success.
Did Someone say Cheesecake
A proper homemade cheesecake that tastes good pretty much solidifies your status as a domestic goddess/god within the household. For a very long time, cheesecake has been near impossible to afford to make, because a single block of Philadelphia Cream cheese cost upwards of 150rf, and you need at least two of those to make a single cake.
Enter Emborg Cream Cheese, in both regular and light varieties. We have tested this type of Cream Cheese for both baked and frozen cheese cakes and the flavors of every single one turned out perfect. You can find Emborg Cream Cheese at most supermarkets, including STO.
Soy Milk is Soy Good
For the health conscious or those with special dietary needs, why not step away from regular dairy and use Soy Milk instead? Soy milk is naturally free of lactose, so for those who are lactose intolerant this is a God send. Same for those out there who are vegan, you can now enjoy the same lovely desserts as the meat-eaters by simply subbing out regular cow or goat milk with soy milk.
Find different varieties of So Good Soy Milk at Seagull Foods.
Cream is Cream, right?
There is a very important difference between Cooking Cream and Whipping Cream, and it’s time that you, our readers are made aware of this. Adding whipping cream instead of cooking cream to a cream sauce is a sure-fire recipe for disaster.
Cooking cream is exposed to a bunch of emulsifiers so it doesn’t split from exposure to heat. This makes it perfect for cooking creamy dishes like Butter Chicken or sauces like Alfredo or Carbonara.
Whipping Cream, on the other hand, is made specifically for use in desserts or dessert bases. It creates peaks much better than cooking cream when whipped up, and holds its shape much better. Also, sugars are often added to whipping cream which makes it a no-no for adding to savory dishes.
Cooking cream and Whipping Cream are available at most supermarkets. We love the smaller 200ml Emborg cream varieties, available widely across Male’ including STO, Agora, and Redwave.
The only thing better than Pasta is GIANT Pasta
Giant Pasta is real, ladies and gentleman, and it’s easily available at Seagull Foods.
Imagine surprising your friends and family with a beautiful plate of Giant Penne (Penne Giganti) stuffed with your choice of meaty, veggie or cheesy filling. We recommend using your favorite creamy white cheese, like ricotta or feta, to fill these giant pasta shells, and then baked in a lovely marinara.
